Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Department: Appeals

Job Description:
The organization is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel within the Appeals Division. This division is responsible for handling appeals that originate from nearly all of the organization's litigating divisions and for preparing amicus briefs in cases that implicate the interests of the City. Attorneys in this role will appear before federal and state appellate courts, where they will be tasked with briefing and arguing a diverse array of appeals. The cases handled by this division cover a broad spectrum of subject matters, including administrative law and constitutional issues, particularly those arising from enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales, as well as routine litigation related to the governance of a large municipality and complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and significant public policy issues.

The role offers attorneys a unique perspective on the workings of the City and the opportunity to engage in high-quality appellate practice, contributing to legal developments that impact the City. Attorneys will work both independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff to brief and argue a significant number of appeals annually.

The organization offers flexibility for attorneys to work from home under two potential programs after completing orientation. The first option allows for remote work on a limited and irregular basis, while the second is a Citywide pilot program permitting attorneys to work from home two set days each week, subject to approval by their division. Participation in this pilot requires attending in-person responsibilities on work-from-home days if necessary. This pilot program is being tested Citywide for its efficacy but is not yet permanent.

- Membership in good standing with the New York State Bar or in the process of being admitted.
- Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.
- Prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred but not required.

Salary Information:
Salary range for this position is $87, to $175,.

Additional Information:
The organization is committed to being an inclusive equal opportunity employer, dedicated to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce and providing a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment based on any legally protected status or characteristic. New York City residency is not required for this position. Prospective employees may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
