Job Title: Director, Patent Attorney – Genetics Medicines
Job Responsibilities:
The Director, Patent Attorney will play a crucial role in partnering with research teams to develop, protect, and manage the company's intellectual property in the field of genetic medicines. These medicines are innovative solutions designed to alter genomes and gene expression, promising treatments for various diseases and medical conditions. The role primarily focuses on safeguarding therapeutics in clinical development and advancements in genetic medicine technologies such as CRISPR/Cas genome engineering, anti-sense technologies, antibody-targeted therapeutics, and recombineering technologies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating independently with top-tier scientists and business units to identify inventions related to genetic medicines therapeutics and the underlying technologies.
- Coordinating patent filings and prosecution, and protecting trade secrets.
- Handling administrative patent actions, including post-grant oppositions in Europe, and addressing other intellectual property matters like due diligence, landscape analyses, freedom-to-operate analyses, and validity assessments.
- Advising on emerging legal issues, staying informed on case law and legislative changes.
- Contributing to projects that uphold the highest legal and ethical standards within the IP Department.
- Working with outside counsel to prepare and prosecute US and international patent applications.
- Conducting patent landscape, freedom-to-operate, validity, and patentability assessments for the company’s genetic medicines.
- Managing US and foreign administrative patent actions (., post-grant oppositions, third-party submissions, inter partes reviews).
- Assisting in litigation activities as needed.
- Supporting due diligence projects, agreements, transactional work, administrative initiatives, and policy questions.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess:
- A . in life sciences such as molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, immunology, or neuroscience, with significant research experience.
- A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice before the USPTO and a license to practice law in at least one state, preferably New York.
- At least 5 years of experience in biotechnology patent law within a law firm or corporate law department.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in patent application preparation and prosecution in the biological arts within a law firm setting.
The role demands strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities, and the capability to handle a large and complex docket with minimal supervision. Exceptional communication skills, including presentation, interpersonal, writing, and conflict resolution, are also required.
Salary Information:
The annual salary range for this position is between $202, and $336,, in accordance with . law for positions. For roles based in other countries like Japan and Canada, the salary ranges are provided in accordance with applicable local laws and currency.
