Senior Counsel Life Insurance & Annuity
The Senior Counsel Life Insurance & Annuity will provide legal advice and counsel to all business and shared service units within **Members Only**. They will manage insurance and annuity litigation and disputes, working with minimal supervision and escalating to law and business unit management as needed. This position requires a Juris Doctor degree, substantial experience in handling complex insurance and annuity matters, and strong leadership and supervisory skills.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and expertise on complex issues related to life insurance, annuities, and structured settlements to business and shared service units.
- Draft new or updated insurance policies, annuity contracts, and riders and endorsements in collaboration with Product Management, Actuarial, and Operations.
- Offer policy/contract drafting, administrative support, and legal counsel to Institutional Markets, such as Pension Risk Transfer and Bank-Owned Life Insurance.
- Collaborate with the Compliance Department in responding to market conduct examinations and customer complaints.
- Manage routine litigation matters and claims disputes, effectively and efficiently managing outside counsel.
- Provide legal counsel on reinsurance treaties, amendments, and related agreements, and coordinate with reinsurers and E&O/D&O insurers on disputed claims.
- Draft, negotiate, and finalize complex legal contracts and documents autonomously.
- Undertake complex research assignments from General Counsel and/or Deputy, Associate, or Assistant General Counsels.
- Assist other attorneys with litigation matters and other projects.
- Provide regular training on legal topics to company associates.
- Train and develop staff, providing direction and coaching.
- Comply with all company policies and standards.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from a recognized and accredited law school.
- 10+ years of experience as Counsel, Senior Counsel, or equivalent in handling complex insurance and annuity matters and related litigation.
- Extensive experience in a corporate legal department and/or law firm, working independently with clients.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to build relationships and develop associates.
- Excellent issue identification, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Sound judgment and initiative in selecting effective solutions.
- Strong contract drafting and written communication skills.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with executive leadership and influence others.
- Ability to lead teams of attorneys and colleagues on legal and regulatory matters.
- Appreciable knowledge and perspective of businesses and the ability to focus on the corporate vision.
- Proficient in word processing and email.
- Licensed to practice law in at least one state.
Work Setting/Position Demands:
- Works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time.
- Requires the ability to verbally communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Requires visual acuity to read and interpret various documents and perform visual inspections.
- Requires the ability to prepare written correspondence, reports, and forms.

- Extended hours may be required during peak workloads or special projects/events.
