Job Responsibilities

The Assistant County Attorney I/II will be responsible for providing legal defense for Montgomery County, the Board of Education for Montgomery County, Montgomery College, and various local government entities. The responsibilities include:

- Regular appearances before state and federal courts in Maryland for trials and oral arguments, with occasional appearances in the District of Columbia.
- Defense of claims involving negligence, common law torts, police civil rights violations, constitutional torts, employment discrimination, sexual harassment, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Title IX, among other topics.
- Reviewing, analyzing, and responding to complaints in Maryland state and federal courts.
- Researching relevant legal issues.
- Preparing and arguing various types of motions, including dispositive, evidentiary, discovery, and motions in line.
- Gathering necessary facts from clients and witnesses, retaining appropriate expert witnesses, drafting, answering, and analyzing complex written discovery including electronically stored information.
- Taking and defending depositions.
- Preparing for and conducting bench trials and jury trials.
- Participating in mediations.
- Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for local, state, or federal government.
- Preparing and presenting oral arguments.
- Evaluating and settling claims.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Information

Education:
- Graduation from an accredited university school of law is required.

Experience:
- For the Assistant County Attorney I level (Grade 24): One year of post-degree experience as a law clerk or in a similar capacity is required.
- For the Assistant County Attorney II level (Grade 27): Two years of professional experience as an attorney, including trial experience, is required.

Equivalency:
- There is no equivalency for the education and experience requirements.

License:
- Membership in the Maryland State Bar is required.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in:
- Areas of law handled by the division.
- Trial skills and experience.
- Knowledge of local government law.
- Organization skills.
- Ability to cope with exposure to difficult subject matters.
- Ability to deal with people effectively in difficult, high-stress circumstances.
- Ability to work collaboratively and on a team.

Salary Information

The expected salary ranges for this role on hire are:
- Assistant County Attorney I: $77,738 - $104,639 annually
- Assistant County Attorney II: $88,406 - $129,827 annually

The overall salary range for this position is:
- - hourly
- $4, - $6, biweekly
- $108, - $176, annually
