Job Title: Investment Accountant

Job Responsibilities:

The Investment Accountant at the law firm is tasked with several critical responsibilities that ensure the smooth operation and accurate financial management of the firm's investment entities. Key duties include:

- Creating and maintaining detailed records of all investment portfolio transactions using investment software and manual recordkeeping systems.
- Recording various financial transactions including monthly interest, dividends, distributions, investments, sales, fund capital calls, and partner capital/distributions.
- Managing and reconciling cash balances and facilitating cash activity for all investment entities, which encompasses both investment and investor activities.
- Preparing, editing, tracking, coordinating, reviewing, and supporting all investment opportunities.
- Researching and providing recommendations to address current and former attorney’s questions and requests for information.
- Handling communications with underlying investment managers by saving notices and statements to manual recordkeeping systems, interpreting these notices, and following up with managers to understand transaction details and investment status.
- Conducting research on investment funds, SEC policies, and other investor representation issues.
- Calculating and issuing capital calls and distributions to investors regularly and coordinating with senior payroll accountants for payroll deductions.
- Ensuring compliance with firm, affiliate, and governmental guidelines.
- Performing general ledger financial reporting, reconciling accounts to detail schedules, and allocating income taxes and other expenses periodically. This includes ensuring the timely and accurate preparation and distribution of investment entity financial information.
- Inputting and maintaining accurate data on investors and investments in manual recordkeeping systems, and managing investment allocations, commitments, and transactions in the investment accounting system.
- Leveraging the investment accounting system for timely reporting of investment activity by investor and facilitating the completion of annual financial statements.
- Managing the investment accounting system and serving as a backup for user maintenance.
- Collaborating closely with the tax department to provide necessary information for the completion of investment entity tax returns.

Education and Experience:

To qualify for the position of Investment Accountant at the law firm, candidates must possess:

- A bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or an equivalent field.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, with a CPA designation preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in investment fund administration is preferred.

Specific Skills Required:

Candidates should demonstrate:

- The ability to work effectively with partners and other affiliates of the firm, including their CPAs.
- Proficiency in flow-through entity accounting.
- Effective multitasking and prioritization skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, planning, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- The capability to establish effective working relationships throughout operational groups.
- Fluency in MS Office applications, especially Excel.
- High-level financial analysis skills.
- Good knowledge of GAAP and standard databases.
- Attention to detail while maintaining a focus on the larger picture.

Specific Skills Preferred:

- Experience with fund administration software.
- Working knowledge in investment accounting and/or partnership accounting.

Salary Information:

The compensation for the Investment Accountant position varies by location. The salary ranges are as follows:

- San Francisco Bay Area: $88,540 to $131,550 annually
- Colorado: $69,370 to $103,070 annually
- Illinois: $73,210 to $108,770 annually
- San Diego: $79,760 to $118,500 annually
- Washington state: $73,170 to $108,720 annually

The listed compensation range reflects the typical pay for this role, though it is rare for new hires to receive an offer at the top of the range. Actual compensation may vary depending on experience, skills, market conditions, and internal equity.

The position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, a 401(k) plan, medical, dental, and vision insurance, accrued paid time off starting at 20 days annually, personal medical and parental leave, up to 10 paid holidays, and family care benefits.
