Job Responsibilities
- Review and analyze cases to assist in trial and hearing preparations.
- Prepare evaluations and status reports for clients by analyzing matters.
- Assist attorneys by drafting legal documents such as complaints, answers, routine notices, statements of facts, motions, petitions, and case status reports.
- Establish, organize, and maintain pleading boards, attorney trial boxes and notebooks, expert witness notebooks, document indexes, and lists as necessary.
- Locate and confer with expert witnesses and resource people. Arrange for expert witness inspections and obtain necessary approvals from counsel of record and specified parties.
- Conduct research and locate cases, depositions, opinions, reports, and supporting information.
- Contact and interview parties, witnesses, and experts, including obtaining written statements from witnesses.
- Review and outline depositions and index and summarize documents.
- Utilize computerized litigation techniques and software when applicable.
- Assist in trial preparation.
- Perform assigned legal research using all available resources.
- Manage voluminous records while ensuring compliance with the Patient Privacy Act and confidentiality requirements.
- Follow ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the state.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
Education and Experience Information
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a litigation paralegal role.
- Experience with eDiscovery platforms is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential.
- Knowledge of legal principles and practices acquired through formal paralegal training or its equivalent.
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when evaluating legal matters.
- Ability to proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical, typographical, or spelling errors.
- People skills necessary to communicate in person, by e-mail, and telephone, and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys, and staff.
- Ability to convey information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
- Work occasionally requires an elevated level of effort while organizing and maintaining multiple cases.
- Ability to retrieve, print, and distribute volumes of client files and support information.
- Must be able to push and pull packages, and books weighing up to 20 pounds as well as retrieve and replace objects from shelves of up to 8 feet high.
- Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week, and may also require irregular hours to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to travel to private and public buildings, locally and statewide, via private or public conveyance to assist attorneys in attending to client needs on legal matters.
