Job Title: PRA Paralegal/Analyst (CALIFORNIA)
Job Responsibilities:
The PRA Paralegal/Analyst at the law firm performs a variety of substantive legal work focused on the Public Records Act (PRA) for public agency clients. The role involves working directly with Lead Paralegals in the department to review documents collected in response to requests on behalf of public agency clients under the supervision of attorneys specializing in municipal and public law. Key responsibilities include:
- Tracking and analyzing public records requests submitted to public agency clients.
- Assisting in determining the scope of search required by the public agency to find responsive records.
- Collaborating with public agency staff to transfer documents to the law firm for review. Reviewing databases of documents to determine their responsiveness and tagging documents as privileged or exempt, when necessary, or redacting documents.
- Assisting attorneys in drafting response letters to records requesters and maintaining deadlines to ensure timely provision of records to the public agency client.
- Consulting with attorneys and clients on conclusions regarding exemptions for withholding records and records to be produced.
- Reviewing public agency client records and conferring with Lead Paralegal and/or assigning attorney to prevent unauthorized release.
- Reviewing a large volume of records to identify legal and public policy issues important to the public agency client and consulting with attorneys on how to communicate these issues.
- Acting as a representative on behalf of the public agency counsel, demonstrating professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact in interactions with various stakeholders.
- Researching state, statutory, case, and other authorities applicable to the California Public Records Act.
- Conducting legal, public records, and other research, summarizing findings, and recommending proposed courses of action to the assigning attorney.
- Preparing legal documents and correspondence in draft and final forms, proofreading, and making necessary corrections.
- Maintaining accurate calendar for deadlines and control measures for expedient search and retrieval.
- Keeping documents necessary to meet the firm’s objectives, including daily timekeeping log for billing purposes.
Education and Experience Information:
Required Education:
- . or . degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
- Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program or an affidavit regarding work experience sufficient to comply with California Business and Professions Code Sections 6450-6456.
Required Experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience with electronic document review in a law firm or government setting.
Preferred Skills and Characteristics:
- Previous work experience in a public agency or law office practice serving public agency clients.
- Experience responding to public records act requests.
Salary Information:
The reasonably expected pay scale for this position with 5 or more years of experience is $75,000 - $85,000 annually, non-exempt. The actual salary within that range will depend on the selected candidate’s location and experience.
