Job Title: Rule 9 Legal Interns for Summer 2026 - Recruiting Rising 2Ls
Job Responsibilities:
The Rule 9 Legal Interns will be assigned to a supervising attorney and a specialized unit within the Mainstream Criminal Division, Civil Division, or Juvenile Division. These positions are full-time with working hours from 8:00 . to 5:00 . for a duration of 13 weeks. Interns may be assigned to work at one of the three locations: Seattle, Kent, or Redmond, with a preference option available, though the final assignment is determined by business needs.
In the Juvenile Division, which is renowned for its innovative and effective responses to youthful offending, interns will engage in various legal assignments. The division focuses on holding youth accountable while providing opportunities for life improvement through programs like the CHOOSE 180 Program and Restorative Community Pathways. Interns will have responsibilities that include:
- Conducting legal research and analysis
- Drafting legal briefs and memoranda
- Assisting in case preparation, including case investigation, reviewing evidence, discovery, and witness interviews
- Attending court hearings and other proceedings such as detention review hearings, plea and disposition hearings, and review hearings
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be eligible for a Washington State Rule 9 License and licensed at the time of the internship start in summer 2026. Typically, this requires the completion of the second year in a three-year law program. Part-time students and those in four-year programs should verify eligibility with their school and the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) before applying.
Applicants must be current 2L students who will be between their second and third years of law school during the summer of 2026. A criminal background check, including fingerprinting, is mandatory for all applicants.
Salary Information:
The internship offers a weekly salary of $1,240, but no additional benefits are provided.

Seattle University, University of Washington, or Gonzaga students are encouraged to apply via their school's job listing system in addition to the King County Career website. This allows schools to track student progress during on-campus interviews (OCI) and utilize interview slots committed to by the **Members Only**’s Office (KCPAO).
Out-of-state applicants should note that on-campus recruiting is not anticipated, and there are no funds available to support travel to Seattle.
The interview process includes a review of materials, with notification to candidates selected for an interview. First-round interviews are conducted through a combination of on-campus interviews, job fairs, and directly with the office by August 15. Second-round interviews are scheduled for August 22nd and August 29th, with offers extended by September 12.
Consideration for Future Employment:
1L summer externs applying for a 2026 Rule 9 Internship will be evaluated by their supervising attorney. However, there is no guarantee that an externship will lead to a Rule 9 Intern position or that a Rule 9 Intern position will lead to future employment with the office.
