Butzel Law Firm is seeking an experienced Estate and Succession Planning Paralegal to join our team in Troy. With over 160 years of experience, our firm has a long-standing reputation for providing high-quality legal services to our clients.

As an Estate and Succession Planning Paralegal, you will play a crucial role in supporting our attorneys during all phases of probate, trust administration, estate and gift tax planning, and other estate planning matters. Your responsibilities will include generating estate planning documents, drafting fiduciary income tax returns, preparing accountings for estates and trusts, and coordinating the transfer of assets into trusts.

Job Title: Estate and Succession Planning Paralegal
Location: Troy
Salary: Competitive, based on experience
Experience: 5+ years required

Responsibilities:
- Generate estate planning documents for clients using HotDocs software, including Wills, Trusts, and Durable Powers of Attorney
- Draft fiduciary income tax returns for trusts and inform beneficiaries of their tax liability via IRS Schedules K-1
- Prepare and maintain a calendar system for tax deadlines
- Evaluate assets and verify bank balances for estate and trust administration
- Prepare accountings for estates and trusts
- Coordinate the transfer of assets into trusts, including bank accounts, stock transfers, and real estate deeds
- Draft petitions and proposed orders as necessary
- Correspond with clients and beneficiaries
- Draft inventories, accounts, and petitions for trusts requiring adjudication
- Draft pleadings for registering or terminating trusts and appointing or substituting trustees
- Prepare accountings for guardianships and conservatorships
- Conduct preliminary valuations of assets held by the ward/conservatee
- Obtain and draft necessary documents for probate proceedings
- Coordinate with out-of-state attorneys for ancillary proceedings
- File life insurance and other death benefit claims
- Obtain and review financial records for tax returns
- Maintain estate bank accounts and investments
- Draft individual, estate, fiduciary income, and gift tax returns
- Collect documentation for tax return audits

Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree and Paralegal Certification from an ABA approved program
- 5+ years of experience as a Paralegal with demonstrated abilities in major areas of responsibility
- Good organizational and project management skills
- Proficient in using online legal research services and resources
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Sound judgment and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel and HotDocs
- Experience with tax software programs
