Job Responsibilities:
The Fall Internship Program at the Office of the Attorney General in Florida offers law students a valuable opportunity to gain practical legal experience. Interns will be engaged in meaningful work that contributes to their academic and professional development. The program primarily caters to law student interns and spans several divisions within the Office of the Attorney General. Interns will have responsibilities across various divisions, including:
1. Antitrust: Enforcing state and federal antitrust laws through investigations and litigation, preserving competition, and providing antitrust counsel.
2. Consumer Protection: Enforcing consumer protection laws, investigating business practices, litigating in courts, and partnering with other agencies for joint enforcement efforts.
3. Criminal and Capital Appeals: Representing state prosecutions in criminal appeals and handling death penalty litigation.
4. Civil Litigation: Representing the state in class action lawsuits, handling civil actions, and protecting public interest.
5. Complex Litigation: Managing high-impact cases involving constitutional challenges and statutory interpretation across multiple jurisdictions.
6. Civil Legal Services: Providing legal services for state agencies, including representation in various courts and general counsel services.
7. Child Support Enforcement: Representing the Department of Revenue in child support cases and providing appellate representation.
8. Revenue Litigation: Representing the Department of Revenue in tax-related matters and contested assessments.
9. Ethics Bureau: Prosecuting potential violations of the Florida Code of Ethics and serving as prosecutors for the Ethics Commission.
10. Lemon Law: Enforcing compliance with Florida’s Lemon Law and resolving disputes between consumers and manufacturers.
11. Medicaid Fraud Control: Investigating and prosecuting Medicaid fraud and patient abuse in facilities receiving Medicaid payments.
12. Statewide Prosecution: Prosecuting crimes impacting multiple judicial circuits and coordinating with law enforcement.
13. Cyber Fraud Enforcement: Combating cybercrimes related to fraud and identity theft, and enforcing consumer protection laws.
14. Office of the Solicitor General: Handling complex litigation, supervising appeals, and advising on amicus curiae matters.
Education and Experience Information:
The internship program is open to students enrolled in an accredited ABA law school. It offers unpaid internships for academic credit and through participation in law school-sponsored programs. Eligibility requirements include:
- Enrollment in an accredited ABA law school
- Ability to intern a minimum of 20 hours per week
- Completion of the application packet, including a résumé, letter from an advisor or university, and transcript
- 2nd and 3rd-year law students may need to provide a writing sample during the interview process
Salary Information:
The internship positions are unpaid. Interns will not receive compensation or benefits, except for Worker’s Compensation benefits, for their voluntary work.
The program encourages students to apply early, as applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The application deadlines for different terms are as follows:
- Spring: September 30, 2024
- Summer: February 28, 2025
- Fall: June 30, 2025
Interns will gain exposure to various areas of law and work closely with experienced attorneys, enhancing their legal skills and understanding of the legal system. The program provides a platform for law students to contribute to significant legal work and develop their professional network.
