Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for the Southern District of Texas, located in Laredo, Texas, is tasked with the enforcement of federal laws and prosecution of violations within the Criminal Division. AUSAs are responsible for handling cases related to organized crime, financial litigation, immigration, drugs, firearms, public corruption, asset forfeiture, and white-collar crime. This role involves frequent courtroom appearances and requires the AUSA to work collaboratively with other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Responsibilities will expand and assignments will become more complex as the individual's training and experience grow.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must hold a Juris Doctor (.) degree and must be active members of the bar in any . jurisdiction. A minimum of one year of . legal or relevant experience is required. Preferred qualifications include strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability, high-volume courtroom experience, and outstanding organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills. Experience with first-chair jury trials and grand jury practice is preferred. Candidates should be proficient in using computers for legal research and writing and should be self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Relevant favorable experience includes investigating and prosecuting or defending criminal offenses.
Salary Information:
The salary for the Assistant United States Attorney is administratively determined based on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is $76, to $130,, which includes a locality pay of %.
Additional Information:
- This position requires . citizenship and successful completion of a background investigation, including fingerprint, credit, and tax checks, as well as drug testing.
- The position is a term appointment not-to-exceed March 31, 2028, with the possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent appointment without further competition.
- Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
- The role requires travel, averaging 1 to 5 nights per month.
