Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Criminal Division of the Southern District of Texas is responsible for prosecuting a broad range of federal crimes. These include organized crime, financial litigation, immigration violations, drug offenses, firearms offenses, public corruption, asset forfeiture, and white-collar crime. AUSAs are tasked with enforcing federal laws, defending the interests of the United States, seeking just punishment for the guilty, and ensuring the impartial administration of justice. The role involves frequent courtroom appearances, and responsibilities will increase and become more complex as the attorney gains training and experience. AUSAs must work in a supportive and professional team environment alongside other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must possess a Juris Doctor (.) degree and be an active member of the bar in any . jurisdiction. A minimum of one year of . legal or other relevant experience is required. Preferred qualifications include strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability, high-volume courtroom experience, outstanding organizational and time management skills, and interpersonal skills. Courtroom experience, particularly first-chair jury trials, is preferred. Candidates should be capable of conducting their own legal research and writing, preparing correspondence and pleadings, and should have experience in investigating and prosecuting or defending criminal offenses. Expertise in grand jury practice and experience with investigative and prosecution techniques are also desirable.
Salary Information:
The salary for an Assistant United States Attorney is administratively determined based on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range, which includes % locality pay, is $76,800 to $130,000. Additional benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System.
The position is a term appointment not to exceed March 31, 2028, with the possibility of extension or conversion to permanent status without further competition. The role is full-time, with an expected travel requirement of 25% or less. The position requires . citizenship and is subject to a background investigation, including fingerprint, credit, and tax checks, as well as drug testing. Candidates must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof, in accordance with 28 . 545. The position is located in Laredo, Texas.
