JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

POSITION SUMMARY: A Paralegal assists with substantive legal work for which an attorney is responsible, and the day-to-day needs of the attorney(s) he/she is assigned to.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the attorney(s) he/she is assigned to, Practice Group Leader, and the Department Chair for matters regarding legal work. Paralegals also report to the Office Manager for administrative matters. The role does not include supervisory responsibilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Maintain an annual billable hour goal of 1,440 hours for all full-time paralegals.
- Track and maintain own hours, both billable and non-billable.
- Communicate with attorney and/or client to take instructions, obtain information, report on the status of matters, and otherwise support legal actions.
- Work with attorneys to draft and prepare all documentation required for various types of transactions as assigned.
- In some instances, responsible for clerical work in preparing documents.
- Organize, maintain, review, summarize, and analyze documents and records, compile information, and recommend a course of action.
- Be familiar with locating and obtaining Circuit and Magistrate Court records.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of statutes, court decisions, and customs relating to legal procedures and practices in appropriate areas of law, including filing procedures in all required states.
- Prepare and oversee status checklists.
- Assist attorneys in the preparation of filings pertaining to specific areas of law.
- Request and gather copies of documents from various sources as necessary.
- Conduct investigations as necessary.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s degree in legal studies or a related field is required.

SKILLS:

- Ability to perform legal research.
- Ability to interview witnesses and document what is learned.
- Ability to organize large volumes of diverse materials and draft complex documents.
- Ability to analyze legal documents for accuracy.
- Ability to recognize legal/technical issues and effectively recommend a course of action.
- In-depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles.
- Basic computer skills.

PREFERRED:

- Prior law firm experience is preferred.
- Detail-oriented and strong attention to detail.
- Exercise good judgment.
- Able to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
- Able to prioritize and work under a tight schedule.
- Able to travel, as needed, based upon client demands.
- Able to work overtime, as needed, to meet deadlines.

WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Lifting up to 40 lbs., some stretching and reaching, ability to work under stress and time restraints, walking and climbing stairs, sitting for long periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Indoor office environment with extended periods of time working on a PC. On occasion, must be able to work more than 40 hours per week.

JOB STATUS: This is a full-time, nonexempt, hours per week position.
