Job Title: Assistant Public Defender
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Public Defender, designated as Public Defender I, is an entry-level position for developing attorneys. These attorneys perform legal work under the mentorship and supervision of more experienced attorneys, such as the Chief Public Defender or a designated Deputy Defender. The primary responsibility of Public Defender I is to represent adults charged with criminal felonies in their local district court jurisdiction, who are deemed indigent and unable to afford to hire an attorney. Attorneys in this role are expected to develop fundamental trial skills and become proficient in managing all aspects of their caseload. Key responsibilities include:
- Advocating for clients by providing team-based, client-centered representation.
- Managing and organizing complex litigation while ensuring effective communication in both written and oral forms.
- Using necessary electronic devices, including computers, e-filing systems, and case management systems.
- Coordinating with supporting personnel to provide holistic representation.
- Demonstrating appropriate time management and organizational skills to avoid unnecessary delays in clients' cases through preparation and planning.
- Handling emergency or crisis situations and frequent interruptions, multiple calls, and inquiries.
- Interacting respectfully and appropriately with clients, co-workers, and colleagues.
- Maintaining confidentiality and managing confidential information.
- Traveling occasionally to other work locations, including courts and jails.
Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must be graduates from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Licensed attorneys in good standing in the State of Kansas at the time of employment are required.
- Candidates who anticipate taking the bar exam in 2025 will also be considered.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Candidates must have exceptional communication skills and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to a client-centered practice.
Salary Information:
The position offers an annual salary range of $62,500, which can vary depending on education, experience, or qualifications.
