The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) in trial offices throughout the state. This entry-level position offers the opportunity for developing attorneys to gain experience under the guidance of experienced attorneys and supervisors. The mission of the Board is to provide relentless representation and holistic advocacy for adults charged with felonies who cannot afford an attorney. The organization is currently in the process of rebuilding its public defense model to focus on collaboration and community connections. The ideal candidate for this position is a dynamic and client-centered advocate who is passionate about public defense. Responsibilities include representing indigent clients in criminal felony cases and developing fundamental trial skills. Qualifications include a law degree from an accredited school and a current or pending license to practice law in Kansas.
