The City of Detroit is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel to join their Law Department and provide legal services related to transaction and economic development matters. As a Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel, you will represent Detroit in all civil actions and provide legal advice and counsel to the City, its elected officials, departments, agencies, and employees. This is a certified-regular civil service position with a salary range of - hourly and $107, - $151, annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
The City of Detroit's Law Department is an independent agency that serves as the legal representation for the City of Detroit. The department is led by the Corporation Counsel and has a team of attorneys who specialize in various areas of law. They provide legal advice, opinions, and counsel to the City and its employees, defend legal actions against the City, and prosecute violations of State Law and City Ordinances. They also assist in drafting City ordinances and other legal instruments, including transactional and contractual documents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare, review, and negotiate contracts for goods and services, grants, and fiscal sponsorships.
- Negotiate agreements for the acquisition, conveyance, and development of real property.
- Provide legal advice on zoning, land use, environmental, regulatory, and administrative law matters.
- Counsel the City on management and maintenance of its real estate portfolio.
- Serve as counsel to various City boards and commissions.
- Perform special projects as assigned by superiors.
- Provide updates on case status to the Corporation Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree from an approved American Bar Association Institution.
- Membership in the State Bar of Michigan.
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of legal research techniques, particularly in municipal corporation law.
- Familiarity with State and Federal statutes related to municipal corporation law.
- Knowledge of municipal codes and ordinances.
- Excellent skills in legal research, writing, and drafting.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Display of independent judgment, maturity, and proactive approach to handling legal matters.
- Ability to remain composed and professional in high-stress situations.
Supplemental Information:
Physical Demands:
- The employee will primarily work in an office environment, operating office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
- Occasional movement may be required to open file cabinets and move files.
- Must be able to lift, push, and carry up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed in an office setting, but may require travel to meetings, conferences, and other work sites.
- Candidates may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation.
