Job Title: Assistant Attorney General I-III
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Attorney General I-III positions involve representing the State’s interests in charitable trusts, deceptive trade practices, and other civil matters. Key responsibilities include:
- Analyzing complex factual and legal issues and developing evidence through various methods, including witness interviews, undercover operations, examinations under oath, depositions, and civil investigative demands.
- Representing the **Members Only** and other state agencies in state and federal district and appellate courts in charitable trust and civil enforcement cases pursuant to the Texas Business Organizations Code, Texas Trust Code, the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, and other consumer protection laws.
- Preparing legal opinions, memoranda, briefs, pleadings, motions, petitions, and other legal documents.
- Participating in administrative and evidentiary hearings and the discovery process.
- Conducting legal research and reporting findings and conclusions.
- Maintaining a low to medium volume of litigation cases and investigations, with an increase in volume for AAG II and III levels.
- Communicating with representatives of state agencies and consumers.
- Testifying at hearings, trials, and legislative meetings (AAG III).
- Ensuring the security and confidentiality of sensitive and protected information.
- Complying with all agency policies and procedures, including those related to ethics and integrity.
Education and Experience Information:
Assistant Attorney General (AAG) I:
- Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (.).
- Licensed as an attorney by the State Bar of Texas and a member in good standing, eligible to practice law in Texas by the start date.
- Skills in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, legal research, writing, analysis, conducting investigations, mediation and negotiations, and using applicable software.
- Ability to prepare legal documents, conduct research, interpret and apply laws, prepare cases, present at trial, and conduct hearings.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a professional office environment and provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel and work more than 40 hours as needed.
- Ability to travel up to 20% and lift and relocate 30 lbs.
Assistant Attorney General (AAG) II:
- All functions for an AAG I, plus:
- Experience: One year of full-time experience in fields such as corporation law, nonprofit law, charitable trusts, probate, estate, and trusts, consumer protection, commercial litigation, or civil litigation.
Assistant Attorney General (AAG) III:
- All functions for an AAG II, plus:
- Experience: An additional year of full-time experience as a licensed attorney in fields such as corporation law, nonprofit law, charitable trusts, probate, estate, and trusts, consumer protection, commercial litigation, or civil litigation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education focused on wills and estates, trusts, consumer protection, and/or commercial litigation subjects.
- Experience using electronic document review platforms, including Relativity, and programs such as Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and Word.
- Knowledge of legal principles and practices relevant to the Texas Business Organizations Code, Texas Trust Code, nonprofit law, Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, and relevant consumer protection statutes, including state and federal privacy laws.
- Proven ability to lead others and work within a larger organization.
- Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak Spanish is advantageous.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant Attorney General I-III positions is between $7, and $8, monthly.
