Job Title: Attorney III
Job Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and Regional Director on various issues, including formulating policies and procedures, handling administrative matters, mentoring less experienced attorneys, training regional office staff, reviewing drafts of case-related documents, and managing complex case work.
- Assist the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel in formulating legal strategies and positions in cases that may affect large numbers of farmworkers and impact future cases.
- Review and oversee staff handling petitions for elections and union representation.
- Prepare legal memoranda involving in-depth legal research and analysis.
- Represent the General Counsel on legal cases and serve as lead counsel or second chair at hearings as needed.
- Mentor less experienced attorneys, helping them develop skills such as research, writing, analysis, oral advocacy, hearing preparation, and law and motion work.
- Serve as a writing mentor to assigned regional office attorneys, assisting them in developing writing, research, and analysis skills.
- Review drafts of pleadings, document demands, subpoenas, motions, and other legal documents prepared by regional office attorneys.
- Review investigative interview questions and help oversee investigations and other work by regional office staff.
- Assist with hearing preparation of witnesses in both Spanish and English.
- Advise and support the General Counsel on various matters, including departmental and General Counsel program policies and procedures, general department legal matters, public records act requests, dismissal appeals, and policy issues.
- Assist with formulating policies and procedures for program-wide efforts, including farmworker outreach, farmworker referral hotline, and ensuring effective case management systems.
- Represent the Office of the General Counsel in legal proceedings and coordinate litigation and communications with outside counsel.
- Assist with drafting, reviewing, and conducting staff trainings, as well as community outreach presentations in English and Spanish.
- Draft and/or comment on proposals for new regulations and changes to existing regulations, involving complex procedural and substantive policy issues.
- Advise and prepare the General Counsel for public hearings on important policy and budgetary issues.
- Analyze and track proposed legislation that may impact the organization’s work and advise and prepare the General Counsel for possible legal issues raised by proposed legislation.
- Represent the General Counsel in contacts with legislators and legislative staff members regarding pending legislation.
- Coordinate strategy and General Counsel approach on major policy and procedural issues.
- Provide advice and written memoranda on legal matters of special importance to the General Counsel.
- Advise the General Counsel and draft responses to letters or inquiries from legislators, parties, or the public that raise sensitive and complex issues, including coordinating General Counsel responses to media inquiries.
Education and Experience Information:
- The position requires a BAR License.
- Minimum of five years of legal experience in the practice of law is required.
Salary Information:
- The salary range for the Attorney III position is $10, - $14, per month.
Note: The position requires fluency in the Spanish language, and candidates may need to pass a language fluency test prior to being hired. The role involves a variety of legal responsibilities, including mentoring, policy formulation, and complex legal work, under the general direction of the General Counsel and other higher authorities within the organization.
