Job Title: Legal Assistant
Job Responsibilities:
As a legal assistant at the law firm, you will be entrusted with a variety of responsibilities to support lawyers and paralegals. Your primary duties will include:
- Answering phones and managing communication
- Drafting documents and maintaining organized files
- Utilizing computer software for organizing and managing case data and documents
- Assisting lawyers in preparing for depositions, trials, and hearings
Your specific responsibilities will encompass:
- Scheduling interviews, meetings, and depositions with clients, witnesses, lawyers, and outside vendors
- Tracking and organizing files from case documents to ensure easy access and availability for attorneys
- Investigating case facts to ensure consideration of all relevant information
- Identifying appropriate materials, legal articles, judicial decisions, and laws for assigned cases
- Organizing, analyzing, and compiling information related to cases
- Collecting and recording exhibits
- Developing written statements and preparing motions and pleadings for court filing
- Securing affidavits and supporting attorneys during trials
- Searching legal records in computer databases
- Gathering and arranging evidence and other legal documents for attorney review and case preparation
- Drafting correspondence and legal documents
- Obtaining affidavits and other formal statements for use as evidence in court
- Assisting lawyers during trials by handling exhibits, taking notes, or reviewing trial transcripts
- Filing exhibits, briefs, appeals, and other legal documents with the court or opposing counsel
Education and Experience Information:
- A college degree or a two-year degree is required
- A Legal Assistant diploma or certification is preferred
- A minimum of 1+ year of experience is required, with preference given to those with experience in personal injury law
- Strong telephone and language skills are essential
- Working knowledge of case management software is necessary
- Proficiency in using Pacer, Casenet, and other online e-filing systems
- Competency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is required
The ideal candidate should possess significant knowledge of legal procedures and protocols in civil litigation for Missouri and Kansas. The ability to multitask, work at a fast pace, and independently is crucial. Responsibilities also include transcription, drafting of documents/discovery/pleadings, fielding client calls, opening/closing cases, and organizing all incoming mail and court filings for review. E-filing for two attorneys will also be part of the role.
Availability to work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, with occasional flexibility to work nights and/or weekends during trials, is required. Stability and dependability are vital for this position.
Salary Information:
- The position offers a base pay range with a minimum salary of $30,000 and a maximum salary of $43,000 per year.
- The median salary is approximately $36,000 per year.
- Pay is estimated by the employer and reflects the expected range for this role.
