JOB TITLE: Legal Secretary - Public Defender
EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program. Three (3) years of work related experience or 45 hours of college credit or a combination of the two.
SALARY: Minimum salary of per hour, with a maximum salary of per hour.
LOCATION: Public Defender's office in Dallas, TX, United States.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Provide routine secretarial support for a unit of attorneys.
- Utilize computer knowledge to create forms and documents.
- Screen telephone calls and compile routine data.
- Organize and maintain files and calendars.
- Work with minimal supervision and rely on experience and judgment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist attorneys with follow-up calls, retrieving documentation and evidence, and drafting legal correspondence and documents.
- Serve as a liaison for the department by greeting visitors, screening calls, and taking messages.
- Enter and maintain case and statistical data and generate reports.
- Maintain filing system and handle a variety of legal documents.
- Provide assistance to attorneys with tasks such as copying and filing.
- Offer limited support with computer and software related issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of work related experience or 45 hours of college credit.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
- Ability to type 50 wpm.
- Must be able to pass required skills test(s) determined by the Elected Official or Department Head.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships while maintaining confidentiality.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- May require prolonged sitting, standing, and ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. unassisted.
