Job Title: Bar Candidate: Paralegal III - Conversion to Attorney I
Job Responsibilities:
The role involves performing paraprofessional legal work under direct supervision, which includes training with a supervisory attorney to learn entry-level attorney functions. Essential functions may include assisting attorneys with researching legal questions, preparing drafts of motions and pleadings, conducting interviews and investigations, participating in trial and pre-trial strategy, acting in a liaison capacity, preparing discovery requests and answers, and coordinating educational activities.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have a Law Degree from an accredited ABA school and the ability or intent to sit for the next available Arizona Bar Exam following hire. As a condition of employment, candidates must successfully pass the Arizona Bar Exam and receive a license to practice law within 12 months from the date of hire. Additionally, candidates must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license and the ability to be covered by county insurance. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience that provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Candidates should have considerable knowledge of state, civil, and criminal law, methods of legal research, legal terminology, rules of evidence, and principles, methods, materials, references, and practices of legal research. Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammatical usage is also required. The candidate must have considerable skill in analyzing and interpreting legal documents, interpreting statutory and regulatory requirements, preparing summaries of legal opinions from previous cases, determining alternative courses of action, presenting arguments appropriate for court, and handling multiple unanticipated problems simultaneously. Good skill in data collection, the use of word/data processing systems, operating standard office machines, and organizing and managing case files is necessary. The ability to plan work and work independently, establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public, prepare and maintain accurate records, follow written and verbal instructions, read, write and speak English, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing is essential.
Salary Information:
The anticipated rate of pay for this position is $63,398 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package, which includes membership in the Arizona State Retirement System.
Additional Information:
The position is classified and subject to the provisions of the Merit System Rules pursuant to Arizona Law. It is open until filled, with applications reviewed upon receipt and may close at any time. Special requirements include admission to practice law in Arizona and obtaining a Bar Letter of Good Standing within 12 months of appointment. The position requires a post-offer, pre-employment background screening.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed under the direct supervision of an attorney or supervisor in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. The physical requirements include lifting, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate. Sedentary work involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. It involves sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally. Mental application involves utilizing memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills.
