Job Title: Court Monitor
Job Responsibilities:
The organization is seeking to fill Court Monitor positions statewide within the Judicial Branch under the Court Services department. The primary responsibility of the Court Monitor is to operate digital courtroom recording equipment to capture court proceedings accurately.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct tests on digital recording equipment before court proceedings to ensure operational status.
- Operate digital recording equipment to capture a verbatim record of court proceedings.
- Confidently monitor proceedings using headphones to ensure recording is taking place.
- Annotate the record using log notes entered directly into the system.
- Mark exhibits during court proceedings and submit them to the Clerk of Court.
- Retain all court paperwork, including case information sheets, exhibit lists, and witness lists, and scan them to the supervisor. If no access to a scanner, organize paperwork by week to provide to the supervisor during court visits.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- A High School Diploma or its equivalent and two years of related legal or court work experience are required.
- An Associate Degree or higher may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Experience in computer and word processing and the ability to operate digital recording equipment are necessary.
- Must be able to maintain concentration and sit in a courtroom for extended periods.
- Dependable transportation is required as the position may involve occasional travel to courthouses throughout the circuit.
- Punctuality and avoidance of excessive absences are required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the legal system and court proceedings.
- Understanding of grammatical rules, spelling, and language use.
- Ability to operate digital recording equipment to capture a verbatim record, annotate recordings, and mark exhibits during court proceedings. (Specific training on the organization’s digital recording equipment and courtroom procedures will be provided.)
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, judges, attorneys, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain concentration and sit in a courtroom for extended periods.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with judicial staff, court personnel, and the general public.
Preferred Qualifications (Desirable Education and/or Experience):
- Training and/or experience in legal terminology and court procedures, and in legal practices such as those gained by paralegals, legal secretaries, and legal assistants.
- Experience working in a court or legal setting.
Salary Information:
The annual salary for the Court Monitor position is $41,425.
