Overview:
- This vacancy is for a term law clerk to Chief . District Judge for the District of South Carolina Timothy M. Cain.
- The law clerk has full responsibility for assigned civil and criminal cases.
- Duties include reviewing complaints for jurisdiction, conducting legal research, drafting proposed orders, managing a civil docket, and attending court proceedings.
- Other duties include administrative tasks such as handling the chambers' calendar, answering the phone, and greeting visitors.
- This position requires a detail-oriented self-starter with excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Maturity, ethics, and commitment to the law are required.
- Some travel may be required.
- Proficiency in computer assisted research, Windows, and Microsoft Word is necessary.
- This appointment is intended to last for at least one year, with the option to extend for up to four additional years.
- The position is located in the upstate of South Carolina, with a duty station in Anderson, SC and some work in Greenville, SC.
- The caseload is heavy and diverse, often involving complex legal issues.
- The office environment is personable with daily interaction with the judge and other court staff.

Qualifications:
- Law school graduate with standing in upper third of class or equivalent experience.
- Experience on the editorial board of a legal journal or other scholarly publication is preferred.
- Post-law school legal work experience is preferred.
- Experience with Westlaw is also preferred.
- Excellent legal writing skills are required.
