Job Title: Legal Assistant
Job Purpose: Under general direction, the Legal Assistant performs a comprehensive range of complex workers' compensation secretarial and legal tasks using legal terminology, procedures, and documents. The role involves coordinating the preparation of legal documents and correspondence for the law firm.
Job Responsibilities:
- Receive, prepare, and potentially transcribe legal dictation, including initial reports, status reports, conference summaries, lien settlement agreements, and contribution settlement agreements.
- Proofread and correct prepared materials to ensure accuracy in grammar, spelling, punctuation, format, syntax, and content.
- Compose routine letters and memoranda, applying knowledge of work area instructions and guidelines.
- Maintain files, logs, and other information related to work overseen by the assigned hearing representative or manager.
- Prepare Pre-Trial Conference Statements, settlement documents, and trial exhibits before hearings and depositions, as applicable.
- Accurately document and bill for all billable work and tasks in accordance with billing procedures.
- Efficiently navigate and troubleshoot various software programs and systems; resolve technical issues and ensure seamless operation of office technology, including computers and other relevant equipment.
- Navigate various computer programs/websites simultaneously and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Receive and place telephone calls.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a Legal Assistant/Secretary in a workers' compensation defense firm is required.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Dropbox or other shared cloud storage is essential.
- Skilled typing ability, along with strong writing, proofreading, spelling, and grammar skills, is required.
- Experience with Case Management Software, Legal Billing, and EAMS is a plus.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public, clients, and employees; maintain confidentiality and use discretion and tact; work independently in the absence of specific instruction.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working well under pressure with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and take pride in their work product. This is a fast-paced position requiring critical thinking skills and the ability to problem-solve. Additionally, the role requires collaboration with hearing representatives and staff at all levels to achieve goals.
Salary Information:
- Compensation: $26 - $35/Hour
