Job Title: Vice President & General Counsel Experience: 15 years Department: Legal Counsel Salary: $450,000 - $575,000 per year Firm: Reputed Private Jesuit Research University in New York City H1: Vice President & General Counsel at Reputed Private Jesuit Research University in New York City H2: Chief Legal Strategist and Advisor for Higher Education Institution Position Summary: - Reporting directly to the University President, the Vice President & General Counsel (GC) will serve as the chief legal strategist and senior advisor for all legal matters impacting the University. - The GC will be responsible for navigating the complex legal landscape of higher education, ensuring compliance, and safeguarding the institution's integrity and reputation. - This executive position requires a dynamic and experienced legal expert who can handle a wide range of legal challenges, from regulatory compliance and labor & employment issues to crisis management. - The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of higher education law and a strong awareness of how legal decisions can impact the University's mission and values. - As a key member of the President's cabinet, the GC will play a pivotal role in shaping legal and policy decisions that influence the University's strategic direction and operational effectiveness. - This role also involves collaborating with various departments to provide legal insights that support the University's academic and administrative goals. About the Office of Legal Counsel: - The Office of Legal Counsel provides legal advice and services to the University in support of its mission and goals. - The office ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and works to minimize risks and support informed decision-making by management. - It also manages outside legal services and oversees the University's response to legal actions. - The office serves as a resource for educating University leaders on legal and regulatory changes affecting higher education. Essential Functions: - Serves as the chief legal advisor to the President, Board of Trustees, and senior administration on a wide range of legal issues, including governance, compliance, policy development, contracts, employment and labor law, litigation, and risk management. - Leads the Office of the General Counsel and manages a team of attorneys and support staff. - Educates University leaders on legal and regulatory changes and assists in developing and revising University policies. - Drafts, reviews, and negotiates complex agreements and contracts. - Develops and executes strategies to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. - Guides strategies and provides counsel on intellectual property protections and employment law matters. - Directs legal risk mitigation strategies and oversees the University's response to legal actions. - Counsels the Board of Trustees on University bylaws and governance best practices. - Manages outside counsel and legal expenses. - Fosters relationships with external legal entities and serves as a University liaison on legal affairs.
