Job Description
The Deputy General Counsel reports directly to the Sr. Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel. This role is crucial in providing timely and thoughtful legal advice to the University on a broad range of legal issues faced by higher education institutions. These areas include athletics, labor and employment, litigation, education and nonprofit law, tax, risk, compliance and regulatory issues, intellectual property, contract review, drafting and negotiation, development, gifts and estates, real estate, research and technology transfer, civil rights laws, student discipline and other student affairs, faculty governance, immigration, and information technology, data security, and data privacy.
The Deputy General Counsel manages the day-to-day operations of the Office of General Counsel, handling the assignment of matters and collaborating with the General Counsel to manage the long-range planning of legal services. This includes overseeing office staff, comprising three generalist attorneys handling a wide variety of legal matters and specialists with distinct practice areas.
The Deputy General Counsel must contribute to the overall work product of a relatively small legal team and work efficiently and proactively on various legal matters. The role requires organizing, overseeing, and managing multiple projects, prioritizing University needs dynamically, and efficiently delegating internally and externally to balance workloads within the Office and among staff members. The Deputy General Counsel should be an exceptional communicator and team player, representing the University ethically and professionally, committed to excellence, and inspiring confidence among all constituents.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting the General Counsel in providing legal counsel and strategic decision-making support to University administrators on all legal matters pertinent to an independent, private higher education institution with diverse academic programs.
- Advising and recommending policy and procedure changes based on current case law and applicable statutory and regulatory frameworks, assisting in developing, preparing, and reviewing related policies and procedures, and clearly communicating the legal implications of policy and business decisions.
- Supervising the day-to-day affairs of the Office of General Counsel effectively, supporting the University’s strategic mission and goals while sustaining team motivation and unity.
- Demonstrating skills in listening, servant leadership, collaboration, and diplomacy.
- Building, cultivating, and maintaining relationships across various administrative units, schools, faculties, and academic administrations.
- Performing exceptional legal research, analysis, and writing; drafting and reviewing legal memoranda, litigation documents, contracts, leases, and other legal documents and instruments; overseeing office file management.
- Displaying a solutions-oriented approach to legal problem-solving; assisting in identifying and monitoring potential legal issues and developing solutions that reduce risk.

Qualifications
- . from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in New York State.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in a law firm, in-house counsel, or higher education setting, with significant experience in counseling and advising multiple constituencies on highly complex legal matters and projects.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Excellent communication skills and proven ability to cultivate and maintain relationships of trust with senior management and other stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher education experience with peer institutions.

Salary/Salary Range $200,000 - $220,000
