This firm is great for the partners who have been in the firm more than 10 years and are well-established in the public sector practice. They have a hold on the firm's management, with little transparency. It works for them--not so much for anyone else.
If you are thinking of joining BBK and have a private book or want to focus on private client development, think again. BBK does not understand how to focus on private client development nor does it seem to want to. Public sector work is the firm's bread and butter and continues to be the firm's focus in terms of marketing dollars. The ranks of the equity partners come from the public sector practice and less so from the private practice. In recent months, the firm has seen a lot of flight of great talent in the income partner and associate ranks from attorneys who practice outside the public sector. The firm's bill rates are exceedingly low, even for private sector work. This affects bonus potential and bonus structures, which appear generous quickly become illusory. Firms established rates or rack rates are rarely charged, it is quite likely that income partners won't reach collections thresholds that will permit bonuses. As for base compensation, not only is the firm's base well below market and its competitors, but the firm also does not raise base compensation for income partners. In fact, there are senior associates whose compensation approaches income partner compensation. There is no transparency to how the firm compensates partners or how one is elevated to equity. It is behind the curtain and smoke and daggers.
Great firm for high powered DC type people. If you like the government than this is the place for you. Great place to be and be part of the scene.
I am from a high powered law school and wanted to work for a high powered DC based firm. This one was perfect. The clients are all government based and provide many high profile lobbying clients. I have worked on many national cases and really find the culture at the firm great. There is ample opportunity to move up in the ranks. It also is great for networking with DC people.
The firm is solely in DC and California which can be a problem if you want to work somewhere else. But the pros really outweigh the cons since the cases takes place everywhere.
Thank you.
