Job Title: Staff Attorney, Temporary (UCP - Eastern WA)
Job Responsibilities:
As a Staff Attorney in the Unaccompanied Children Program (UCP) at the organization, the primary responsibilities include offering direct representation, individual consultations, and community outreach and education to immigrant community members seeking immigration protections. This involves representing individuals in removal proceedings before the Immigration Court, on appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals or before the federal courts, and before the Department of Homeland Security. The role also requires providing direct representation to persons submitting affirmative applications with the . Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of State.
The Staff Attorney is expected to conduct presentations, workshops, legal clinics, and intakes, both by phone and in person. They must perform case analysis to determine eligibility for immigration protections/status under immigration laws and maintain a working knowledge of significant policies, laws, practices, and trends in immigration law, especially as they impact low-income immigrants and those affected by the criminal justice system. Additionally, the role involves establishing, organizing, and maintaining files up-to-date, performing administrative tasks related to grant reporting, and participating in outreach, community education, and development efforts.
The role may require handling cases involving individuals in immigration detention and other immigration matters. The Staff Attorney must also perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by supervisory staff based on the organization's needs.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a law degree and be admitted to the bar of any state in the . A demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and eagerness to support the organization's mission, vision, and values is necessary. The candidate should have excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills and the ability to provide trauma-informed and culturally inclusive legal representation.
A commitment to creating a welcoming, professional, and inclusive environment for staff and clients, and the ability to work with a diverse community in a challenging environment, is required. Fluency in English and an additional language(s) is preferred. The role demands a strong ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment, proficiency in the use of web-based software, Microsoft Office applications, and web peer-to-peer communication platforms, and familiarity with G-suite tools.
Prior immigration law and removal experience, experience working with children and youth, and experience working with survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault are preferred. Experience handling a high-volume caseload is also preferred.
Candidates must possess sound judgment and decision-making skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to take on a substantive caseload. A valid driver’s license is required as the position involves some travel.
Salary Information:
This is an exempt, salaried position with a minimum annual salary for candidates with no experience set at $84,. Salaries increase for staff attorneys with specific experience, with candidates having 20 years of relevant experience earning $122, annually, and the current maximum salary, based on 40 years of experience, being $149, annually.
