Job Responsibilities
Interns will engage in a variety of legal and advocacy activities under the supervision of veteran attorneys. Their responsibilities include:
- Conducting client interviews to gather information and understand their legal needs.
- Participating in arraignment and bail arguments to support clients' cases.
- Conducting legal research to aid in case preparation and strategy.
- Drafting pretrial motions, affidavits, and legal memoranda to support legal arguments.
- Engaging in pretrial investigations, including visiting crime scenes and interviewing witnesses to gather evidence.
- Assisting with pretrial motion arguments to help prepare for court proceedings.
Interns are required to maintain confidentiality of all client information and work performed on behalf of clients.
Education and Experience Information
Law students interested in this internship should meet the following qualifications:
- Successful completion or current enrollment in an evidence or trial practice class.
- Written approval by their Dean to represent clients under the supervision of a staff public defender in court as per SJC Rule 3:03.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of courses in evidence, criminal law, constitutional law, critical legal theory, and/or trial advocacy.
- SJC Rule certification.
Salary Information
The internship is an unpaid position.
