Job Title: Asst Gen Counsel II Litigation
Job Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Vice President and Associate General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel II Litigation is tasked with representing the interests of internal business clients during negotiations, pre-suit matters, litigation, and appeals.
- Provides litigation support on behalf of the company and coordinates litigation and other legal matters managed by outside counsel.
- Offers general legal opinions and advice on various litigation and potential litigation matters in areas such as commercial disputes, real estate disputes, physician privileging, and other healthcare litigation issues.
- Manages and supports commercial and general liability litigation matters, providing legal support on litigation and liability-oriented questions or issues to multiple divisions of the company.
- Develops and directs overall case management and strategy from intake through trial, appeal, and/or settlement. This includes reviewing pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs; supporting outside legal counsel in the management of discovery; and ensuring adherence to task and budget requirements through the conclusion of litigation.
- Provides updates by phone and in person to senior management, business clients, and outside legal counsel.
- Attends mediations, arbitrations, trials, and other case-related activities, and negotiates settlement agreements.
- Carries out administrative responsibilities across a wide range and volume of active and potential litigation matters. Duties include organizing documents, maintaining/supervising electronic case files, updating information in law department databases, and participating in litigation group team meetings.
- Other duties as assigned, with additional responsibilities potentially focusing on one or more departments or locations.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited school is required.
- Must be admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or admitted to practice in any State.
- A minimum of 7 years of related experience as a practicing attorney handling complex litigation matters is required.
- Healthcare experience is preferred.
- Must possess the ability to work independently and manage numerous complex legal issues from inception to resolution with minimal supervision.
- Effective communication skills are necessary to interact with management, corporate and support staff, field personnel, attorneys, witnesses, and experts.
- Ability to confidently and clearly present to sophisticated business clients and thrive in a team-oriented environment.
- Excellent legal research skills and writing skills, with demonstrated experience in the preparation of legal documents.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with PCs and Microsoft Office applications is required.
