The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania (USAO) is seeking highly motivated attorneys to join our team as Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs). This is a unique and challenging opportunity to work on a variety of cases and trials, representing the interests of the United States in both criminal and civil litigation. The USAO is a part of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and offers a rewarding work environment for employees of all backgrounds.
The SAUSA positions are located in the Western District of Pennsylvania, which includes 25 counties in the western part of the state. The main office is in Pittsburgh, with branch offices in Erie and Johnstown. The USAO strives to provide an inclusive and rewarding work environment for its employees, and offers opportunities for growth and development. The SAUSA positions are uncompensated and require a one-year commitment, with the possibility of a second year.
Key Responsibilities:
• Represent the United States in civil and criminal litigation in federal and state courts
• Investigate and prosecute federal crimes, including firearms, explosives, counterfeiting, fraud, immigration, drug trafficking, and other violent crimes
• Handle own caseload and conduct trials
• Receive training in investigating and prosecuting federal crimes
• May have the opportunity to attend formal training or conferences with SAUSAs and Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) from districts across the country
Qualifications:
• . degree and active membership in good standing of the bar in any . jurisdiction
• At least 1 year of post . legal or other relevant experience
• United States citizenship is required
• Must pass a pre-employment background adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing
• Must reside in the district for which appointed or within 25 miles thereof
