Job Title: Special Litigation Counsel
Job Responsibilities:
The Special Litigation Counsel in the Albany Litigation Bureau will be responsible for leading and supervising significant and complex civil litigation cases that are of heightened importance to the state of New York. This includes cases brought against high-profile state officials such as the Governor, State Comptroller, and members of the State Senate and State Assembly. The counsel will handle cases involving complex constitutional law issues, statutory and regulatory interpretation, and cases with significant policy and financial implications for the state. The role requires a balance of independent case management and collaborative work, supported by a team of litigators. Key duties include:
- Serving as the lead attorney on significant and/or complex civil litigation from the initial complaint through trial.
- Drafting and editing legal documents and written work products.
- Representing clients and state agencies in state and federal court during hearings for temporary restraining orders, preliminary injunctions, oral arguments, and trials.
- Negotiating and evaluating settlements.
- Providing advice and mentoring to other attorneys on various legal topics.
- Performing non-litigation assignments and special projects as required.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess a minimum of eight (8) years of post-graduate civil litigation experience in federal and New York state courts, with a strong focus on handling complex litigation. Essential qualifications include:
- Excellent skills in legal analysis, writing, editing, and oral advocacy.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in using technology for legal work, including familiarity with various computer software programs and case management and electronic discovery platforms.
- A preference for working with and assisting a large group of attorneys.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Significant prior civil jury trial experience in federal and New York state courts.
- Experience litigating Section 1983 civil rights matters.
- Experience handling emergency applications for judicial relief, such as temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions, including conducting preliminary injunction hearings.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the Special Litigation Counsel position is $81,159 to $173,265. Additional information about attorney compensation can be found on the organization’s website.
