Job Responsibilities
The Senior Attorney in the Department of Financial Services is tasked with a variety of legal responsibilities integral to the functioning of the agency. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting or personally preparing and presenting arguments at judicial and administrative proceedings.
- Presiding at hearings and proceedings, and preparing findings, orders, or decisions.
- Initiating legal actions and other proceedings, or receiving cases from superiors, and preparing charges and specifications against defendants.
- Analyzing and summarizing cases and information pertinent to constitutional provisions, statutes, rules, regulations, policies, and opinions, and planning litigation strategy.
- Preparing for judicial or administrative proceedings by reviewing cases, discussing strategy, coordinating investigations, examining case folders, conferring with program officials, preparing legal memoranda, and issuing subpoenas.
- Presenting or trying cases at proceedings by preparing opening statements and summations, arguing motions, examining witnesses, consulting with parties, examining evidence, preparing briefs, negotiating settlements, preparing appeals, and advising superiors.
- Assisting or personally conducting hearings as a Hearing Officer, Referee, or other presiding officer, relating to matters of concern to the agency or on behalf of other jurisdictions.

Education and Experience Information
Minimum qualifications for the position of Senior Attorney SG-25 include:
- One year as an Assistant Attorney 3 or admission to the New York State Bar and two years of subsequent professional legal experience.
- The position of Assistant Attorney 3 SG-22 requires one year as an Assistant Attorney 2 or admission to the New York State Bar and one year of subsequent professional legal experience.
- The position of Assistant Attorney 2 SG-20 requires admission to the New York State Bar.
- The position of Assistant Attorney 1 SG-18 requires graduation from law school (or other eligibility to take the New York State Bar Examination).
- If appointed as an Assistant Attorney 1, automatic advancement to Assistant Attorney 2 upon admission to the New York State Bar is expected. Failure to gain admission within two years may result in termination.

The Traineeship:
- Appointees to entry-level positions in the Attorney Traineeship are normally advanced after each twelve months of satisfactory service to the next higher title until reaching the full performance level of a Senior Attorney.
- Outstanding performance evaluations may allow for early advancement, reducing the traineeship by six months.
- All service during the traineeship will be probationary, with performance evaluations conducted every six months against established standards.

Salary Information
The salary for the Senior Attorney Financial Services, SG-25 ranges from $66,951 to $121,413 annually.
- Senior Attorney SG-25: $96,336-$121,413
- Assistant Attorney 3 SG-22: $82,326
- Assistant Attorney 2 SG-20: $74,193
- Assistant Attorney 1 SG-18: $66,951

Positions located within the New York City metropolitan area, as well as Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland, and Westchester Counties, are eligible for an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment.
