Job Title:
Senior Claims Counsel - Financial Institutions/Public D&O
Job Responsibilities:
- Handle complex, high severity financial lines claims, which require intricate legal analysis concerning liability, damages, and coverage issues.
- Draft coverage letters, memos, and reports.
- Represent the company in settlement negotiations, possessing independent authority to commit the company.
- Interact with multiple parties such as insureds, brokers, counsel, claimants, and mediators.
- Direct and manage coverage counsel and coverage litigation against the company.
- Collaborate with underwriters, product counsel, and actuaries to address policy wording and claim-related inquiries.
- Work directly with brokers and customers to address similar issues.
- Engage with brokers and existing or prospective clients as part of business marketing, growth, and retention strategies.
- Work alongside senior claim, underwriting, and product leadership to develop new products and identify, evaluate, and track claim trends and issues.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to junior staff members.
- Develop and present training on key legal and industry issues/trends for the financial lines team.
- Represent the company on panels at industry conferences.
- May perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- Bachelor's degree with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
- Admission to the bar in at least one state.
- Typically requires a minimum of twelve years of claims and/or legal experience with a strong track record of exceptional claim results.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Senior-level advanced knowledge of litigation management theories, principles, practices, and procedures.
- Possess the highest level of technical and product-specific expertise, claims resolution skill, and knowledge of insurance and claims principles, practices, and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage ambiguous situations and issues at a senior level.
- Proven capability to take a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives to achieve strategic business results.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
