Job Title: Prisoner’s Rights Impact Litigation Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Prisoner’s Rights Impact Litigation Attorney at **Members Only** (DRW) is tasked with conducting impact litigation and systemic advocacy to enforce the legal rights of incarcerated individuals with disabilities. The attorney will work independently and collaboratively with a team to advance DRW's mission and advocacy priorities. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting legal research and gathering relevant information
- Helping clients define problems and providing legal advice and counseling
- Designing action plans for advocacy on behalf of clients and taking assertive action to implement these plans
- Representing individuals with disabilities on issues pertaining to service requests, advocacy projects, and litigation
- Engaging in policy analysis and advocacy, preparing public comments, and writing policy reports
- Monitoring facilities and community-based settings where individuals with disabilities are served
- Conducting investigations into abuse, neglect, and rights violations
- Providing technical assistance by interviewing service recipients to define problems and understand relevant information
- Utilizing conflict resolution and advocacy skills to resolve conflicts
- Submitting required reports, timesheets, and documentation accurately and timely
- Participating in extensive local and statewide travel for work-related purposes
- Maintaining clear background check status as required by the AVID Program
- Maintaining a reasonably ambitious workload and keeping the supervisor informed of work status
Education and Experience Information:
The position requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with a state bar association. The attorney must also become a member in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association within one year of assuming the position. Desired qualifications include:
- Lived and/or professional experiences involving disability rights issues or public interest law
- Experience working in a non-profit, public interest, or public relations setting
- Deep roots in the disability community with knowledge of independent living and self-advocacy movements
- At least five years of experience as a practicing attorney
Abilities specific to the position include:
- Demonstrated ability and desire to litigate
- Skills in investigation, interviewing, legal research, case strategy, and advanced advocacy techniques
- Ability to present information to various audiences using different media
- Ability to facilitate meetings and discussions
- Understanding of anti-racist concepts and disability justice principles
General abilities expected from the employee include effective communication, teamwork, initiative, time management, and independent work capabilities.
Salary Information:
The position offers an annual salary range between $84,607 and $103,639, based on experience ranging from five to fifteen years. The position is eligible for membership in DRW’s collective bargaining unit and comes with generous benefits such as 401k contributions, medical, dental, and vision care, Health and Flex Spending account options, a Costco Membership, Life Insurance, Long-Term Disability, vacation, sick, holiday, parental leave, and a 35-hour work week.
