Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel position in the Appeals Division involves handling appeals originating from nearly all of the organization's litigating divisions. The role includes preparing amicus briefs in cases that impact the City's interests. Attorneys in this position appear before federal and state appellate courts and are responsible for briefing and arguing appeals across a wide array of cases. These cases include administrative law and constitutional issues, particularly those arising from enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales. Additionally, the role encompasses routine litigation related to the governance of a large municipality, as well as complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and critical public policy issues.
The position offers a unique perspective on the workings of the City and provides an opportunity to engage in high-level appellate practice, contributing to legal developments impacting the City while also expanding knowledge about City government and various areas of law. The role requires working both independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff to brief and argue a significant number of appeals each year.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of being admitted. While prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred, it is not required. Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills are mandatory, as the mission of the organization is to provide outstanding appellate advocacy on behalf of the City.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $87, to $175,.
Additional Information:
The organization offers a work-from-home option for attorneys after the completion of orientation. There are two programs available: one allows for remote work on a limited and irregular basis, and the other is a Citywide pilot program that permits participants to work from home two set days each week. This pilot program is designed to ensure more than 50% staff coverage each day and requires approval from the attorney's division. Work-from-home days may be adjusted if in-person responsibilities arise.
