Job Title: Assistant Public Defender

Job Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of an Assistant Public Defender in the Public Defender's Office, Second Circuit, is to provide effective and professional legal representation to individuals charged with criminal offenses. This position may involve handling misdemeanor and/or felony division cases. The role involves representing indigent clients in both criminal trial and criminal appeal appointments. The office handles nearly 16,500 criminal cases for six Florida counties and over 1,100 cases on appeal for the 32 counties that make up the First District Court of Appeal. The assistant public defender works under the direction of the Public Defender, collaborating with a team of dedicated criminal defense attorneys, investigators, social workers, and support staff to ensure equal justice for all.

Education and Experience Information:
Minimum qualifications for the position include holding a Juris Doctorate degree and being a member in good standing with The Florida Bar. Applicants who have completed the Florida Bar examination and are awaiting results will also be considered. If hired before receiving bar results, candidates will assume the position of "Legal Trainee" with a starting salary of $46,. Upon being sworn into the Florida Bar, the annual salary increases to $61,, along with a promotion to an Assistant Public Defender position. Legal Trainee candidates must provide a copy of their Registrant Clearance from the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. Preferred qualifications include criminal defense litigation experience in county and circuit court. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include familiarity with Florida Rules of Criminal Procedure, Florida Rules of Evidence, and Florida Criminal Statutes.

Salary Information:
The starting salary for an Assistant Public Defender is $65,, commensurate with experience.
