Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Family Court JD-MCU
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel (ACC) will occupy a crucial role within the Family Court Division's Advanced Litigation and Major Case Unit. The primary responsibility involves the investigation and prosecution of firearms cases, though the role may extend to other types of felony cases. This position entails a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
- Handling cases involving the possession and/or use of firearms.
- Appearing in Family Courts across all five boroughs of New York City, primarily working in the Bronx, Brooklyn, or Manhattan offices.
- Serving as the Presentment Agency in juvenile delinquency proceedings before the Family Court, dealing with cases involving youth under 18 who have been arrested for conduct that would be considered criminal if committed by adults.
- Addressing the needs and best interests of the youth involved in these proceedings while ensuring community safety.
- Managing a caseload and being responsible for all aspects of legal practice, which includes:
- Community outreach and engagement.
- Case investigation.
- Motion practice.
- Conducting extensive discovery.
- Courtroom litigation, including pre-trial hearings, trials, and dispositional hearings.
- Drafting cases and appearing in the Youth Part of the Supreme Court as a cross-designated Special Assistant District Attorney.
- Participating in a citywide rotation of night and weekend court assignments.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work independently and possess strong litigation, oral, and written communication skills. Additionally, they must exhibit excellent judgment, exceptional organizational abilities, strong leadership skills, a solid knowledge of criminal law, the Family Court Act, and evidentiary issues, as well as strong interpersonal skills.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel must be admitted and in good standing in New York. They should have substantial experience in family court or criminal law, coupled with litigation experience. A minimum of four years of litigation experience is required for this role.
Salary Information:
The salary range for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel - Family Court JD-MCU is between $87, and $175,.
