Job Title: Senior Surety Counsel, Contractor Support
Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Surety Counsel, Contractor Support, is primarily responsible for providing coverage advice and acting as a strategic partner to claims professionals within the company. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing legal advice on various coverage issues arising from claims handled by the department.
- Conducting legal research and issuing written coverage opinions.
- Assisting in the preparation and review of coverage position letters as needed.
- Reviewing outside counsel’s coverage opinions and draft declaratory judgment actions on coverage issues upon request.
- Participating in strategic discussions about coverage matters.
- Monitoring case law on various coverage issues and informing stakeholders about new developments.
- Providing training on coverage issues to the department.
- Reviewing proposed policy wording upon request.
- Communicating with underwriting partners regarding coverage issues.
- Preparing white papers on coverage-related topics as requested.
- Developing tools to track advice requests, advice provided, coverage opinions issued, and coverage rulings received.
- Developing a workflow process for reviewing coverage issues, providing coverage advice, and determining if outside coverage counsel should be retained.
- Preparing quarterly reports to Claims Management, communicating key performance metrics, identifying action plans for training as needed, and identifying trends relating to coverage issues.
Education and Experience Information:
- Juris Doctor Degree and barred in at least one state.
- At least five years of experience in the surety industry.
- Preferable experience with reverse flow business and large national surety accounts.
- Experience with broker-facing relationships.
- Solution-oriented and excels in problem-solving.
- Ability to distill legal concepts and present risk and exposure scenarios clearly to underwriters.
Salary Information:
The base salary for the position ranges from $104,300 to $173,800, with a 25% bonus potential. The salary offered to the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, experience, training, licensure, competencies, geographic location, and other factors.
