Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel position in the Appeals Division of the department involves handling appeals originating from nearly all of the department's litigating divisions. The responsibilities include preparing amicus briefs in cases that implicate the City's interests. The attorneys are expected to appear before federal and state appellate courts and are responsible for briefing and arguing appeals in a variety of cases. These cases may involve administrative law and constitutional issues, such as enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales, as well as a broader range of subject matters. This includes routine litigation arising from the governance of a municipality with over eight million residents and complex appeals involving cutting-edge legal questions and critical public policy issues. The role offers a unique perspective on how the City operates and provides an opportunity to engage in high-level appellate practice and contribute to legal developments impacting the City. The position requires working independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff to brief and argue a significant number of appeals annually.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of being admitted. Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills are required. While prior appellate experience from practice or through an appellate clerkship is preferred, it is not mandatory.

Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $87, to $175,.

Additional Information:
After completing orientation, attorneys have the opportunity to elect to work from home under one of two programs. The first option allows for remote work on a limited and irregular basis, while the second option, a Citywide pilot program, allows participants to select two set days to work from home each week. Approval from the attorney's division is required, and in-person responsibilities take precedence over remote work on designated days. Participants in the pilot program must set one work from home location. This pilot program is being tested Citywide to determine its effectiveness for City agencies and is not yet permanent.
