Job Title: Staff Attorney – Felony Practice

Salary: $79,000 – $115,000, depending on experience
The **Members Only** is seeking a Staff Attorney to join our team and provide access to justice for vulnerable individuals, children, and families in the Western New York community. As a Staff Attorney, you will be responsible for a variety of trial level activities in the area of criminal law, with a focus on representing indigent persons in the Buffalo City Court, Erie County Court, New York State Supreme Court, and other assigned courts. This is a full-time position with a salary range of $79,000 – $115,000, depending on experience.
Responsibilities:
- Appear at arraignment and subsequent court dates with clients.
- Review accusatory instruments and make arguments for dismissal.
- Conduct eligibility screenings.
- Meet with and remain in touch with clients throughout the case.
- Conduct investigations and retain the service of internal and external investigators as necessary.
- Research and write motions and make oral arguments at hearings and court appearances.
- Discuss and attempt to resolve ancillary issues affecting clients' lives.
- Remain in contact with co-defendant counsel and other attorneys handling the client's other criminal matters.
- Retain and prepare expert witnesses.
- Prepare for and conduct trials.
- Prepare post-conviction motions and pre-sentencing memorandums.
- File a Notice of Appeal, if applicable, and assist with the appeal process.
- Maintain accurate client files.
- Provide coverage for other attorneys as needed.
- Stay updated on changes in criminal law through classes and seminars.
- Meet regularly with CDU Management staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Employment Standards:
- Active membership in the New York State Bar.
- Three years experience as an attorney in trial level criminal defense with a focus on felony defense preferred.
- Computer proficiency and reliable transportation.
- Knowledge of all statutory laws related to practicing criminal law in New York State, trial court procedures, legal research methods, rules of evidence, and ethical and professional rules of conduct.
- Ability to work independently, perform legal research, analyze and apply legal principles, present statements clearly and effectively, maintain confidentiality, manage a caseload, and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
