Job Title: Assistant Corporation Counsel - Appeals

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Corporation Counsel position in the Appeals Division of the Law Department involves handling appeals originating from nearly all of the department's litigating divisions. The role includes preparing amicus briefs in cases that implicate the City's interests. Attorneys in this position appear before federal and state appellate courts and are responsible for briefing and arguing appeals in a variety of cases. These cases can range from administrative law and constitutional issues, such as enforcement measures concerning illegal cannabis sales, to broader subject matters involving the governance of a municipality with over eight million residents. The position also involves dealing with complex appeals that involve cutting-edge legal questions and critical public policy issues. Attorneys will work both independently and collaboratively with supervisors, trial attorneys, client agencies, and executive staff to brief and argue a significant number of appeals each year.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or be in the process of being admitted. The position requires excellent writing, research, and analytical skills, as the mission is to provide outstanding appellate advocacy on behalf of the City. While prior appellate experience, either from practice or through an appellate clerkship, is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement.

Salary Information:
The salary range for the Assistant Corporation Counsel position is $87, to $175,.

Additional Information:
The Law Department offers a flexible work arrangement after orientation, where attorneys can choose between two programs for remote work. The first option allows for limited and irregular remote work, while the second option, a Citywide pilot program, permits attorneys to select two set days to work from home each week. This arrangement requires approval from the attorney's division, ensuring more than 50% staff coverage each day. If in-person responsibilities arise on a scheduled work from home day, attorneys must attend to those duties in person. The pilot program is currently being tested and is not yet permanent.
