The position of Attorney II - Unclassified at Pima County is a highly skilled and advanced legal role within the County Attorney's Office. This position is responsible for handling complex legal matters in either the criminal or civil division. The selected candidate will receive a competitive salary range of $91,201 - $173,282 annually, based on experience and internal equity.
Position Description:
The Attorney II - Unclassified will perform advanced-level legal work for the County Attorney's Office. This includes preparing, defending, prosecuting, and resolving the most complex legal matters. The selected candidate will have considerable latitude in their work, requiring independent judgment and professional discretion. This position is appointed, unclassified, and exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prosecute or defend difficult and complex criminal or civil cases in State or Federal courts
- Manage demanding criminal or civil cases in public sector law
- Represent County departments, boards, and commissions in civil litigation and administrative matters
- Prepare legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and leases
- Provide legal opinions and advice to county officials
- Engage in negotiations for settlement of cases and comply with Victims' Rights
- Conduct pretrial, trial, post-trial, and appellate practice
- Develop and present legal strategies, review legal documents, and negotiate agreements
- Conduct research and provide consultation on complex legal issues
- Draft legal motions, pleadings, briefs, and other documents
- Review and evaluate investigations
- Comply with all rules regulating professional responsibility
- Uphold the values and goals of the assigned department and County
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of civil, criminal, constitutional, or administrative law
- Familiarity with laws, court decisions, and rules of evidence and procedure
- Ability to present and argue cases in court and handle unanticipated problems
- Proficient in legal research and understanding of legal and professional ethics
- Ability to work independently on complex assignments
- Strong collaboration skills, even under stressful conditions
- Skilled in performing difficult and complex legal research
- Effective at preparing, presenting, and conducting extremely complex cases
- Ability to analyze and organize facts, evidence, and precedents
- Skilled in negotiating resolutions for cases
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree
- 5 years of relevant prosecution, defense, or civil experience
- Must have a valid driver's license at the time of application and appointment
