Job Title: School Year Student Volunteer- Unclassified Duties (General Legal)
Job Responsibilities:
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) provides unpaid internships throughout the year, lasting from 12 weeks to 12 months. These internships offer real-world experience that enhances educational and professional growth, which can be applied to future roles in various sectors, including government and private organizations. Interns at CFTC perform substantive legal work and are given opportunities to demonstrate their writing, analytical, and advocacy skills. Depending on the division or office they are assigned to, their responsibilities may include:
- Conducting research and data capturing.
- Collaborating with team members across various projects.
- Drafting memos, public statements, and legal memoranda.
- Reviewing and analyzing evidence, legal documents, and compliance reports.
- Assisting in preparing investigative testimonies, depositions, and discovery.
- Participating in meetings with market participants and external stakeholders.
- Preparing briefing memoranda and presentation materials for international meetings.
Interns may be placed in various divisions or offices, such as:
1. Chairman/Commissioner's Office: Tasks include researching market issues, drafting memos, attending meetings, and providing market oversight.
2. Division of Enforcement (DOE): Interns help with investigating and prosecuting violations of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) by writing legal memoranda and reviewing evidence.
3. Division of Market Oversight (DMO): Responsibilities include examining and assessing self-regulatory and rule enforcement programs of derivatives platforms.
4. Market Participants Division (MPD): Interns assist with oversight in derivatives market intermediaries and prepare legal reports.
5. Office of International Affairs (OIA): Interns oversee international interactions, analyze regulatory policies, and provide technical assistance to foreign authorities.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for this volunteer internship, applicants must:
- Be current students enrolled in an accredited high school, college, or graduate institution.
- Be law students currently enrolled and in good standing as a . or candidate in an ABA accredited law school.
- Have completed at least one year of law school by the requested start date.
- Submit academic transcripts to demonstrate eligibility (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
Applicants must be . Citizens or Nationals and actively enrolled at least part-time in an accredited college or university. The experience may be acquired in the public, private, or volunteer sectors.
Salary Information:
This internship is unpaid. Volunteers are not eligible to receive agency benefits. However, the internship provides valuable work experience and the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in supporting the activities of the Commission.
Additional Information:
- The internship may be completed during the school year or during summer or school vacation periods.
- Students are responsible for coordinating course credit for externship positions with their educational institution.

- Relocation expenses will not be paid, and the intern must report to a CFTC location for onboarding and returning equipment.
