Job Title: DV Family Law Attorney
Department: Legal, Organizing, & Advocacy
Job Responsibilities:
The DV Family Law Attorney will primarily provide consultation and representation to immigrant survivors of intimate partner violence. This role is integral in complementing a holistic array of services offered to victim/survivors at the organization. The attorney will collaborate with a team of staff to connect clients to necessary internal and external services to stabilize them within the community. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing holistic legal representation and advocacy to victims of domestic violence in family law matters, which include family offense, custody/visitation, and child support, with some focus on DV-based immigration advocacy.
- Collaborating with the organization’s existing Domestic Violence Project to offer counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and advocacy.
- Coordinating access for victims to the organization’s other civil legal services, addressing the intersection of domestic violence needs with housing, benefits, consumer issues, and other legal areas.
- Delivering internal training and technical assistance on family law matters and the intersection of domestic violence needs with other civil legal services.
- Compiling and analyzing programmatic statistical information for program reports.
- Participating in community-based initiatives, taskforces, and other outreach activities that address the intersection of domestic violence and family law.
- Attending staff meetings and other team meetings as required.
- Additional related responsibilities may be assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
- A . Law Degree with admission to the New York State Bar is required.
- Relevant family law and courtroom experience is mandatory.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is required.
- Experience working with victims of intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault is preferred.
- Competency and knowledge of trauma-informed lawyering are essential.
- A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues is required, along with an understanding of the challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary.
- Exceptional collaborative skills and the ability to interact with other office staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, are required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is necessary.
Salary Information:
The organization offers a competitive salary based on experience and education, ranging from $83,000 to $91,000. Additionally, a comprehensive and generous benefits package is provided, which includes medical, dental, life, and disability insurance. Paid time off is also offered, including 20 vacation days, 15 sick days, 5 personal days, and 12 agency holidays. A 401k with agency contribution and other benefits are included.
