Job Title: Director of Data

Job Responsibilities:

The Director of Data at the law firm is a pivotal role aimed at establishing the firm as a leader in the digital practice of law. Key responsibilities include:

Data Science Leadership and Strategy:
- Defining the vision and roadmap for the firm's data initiatives in collaboration with the innovation leadership team.
- Leading problem definition and agile problem-solving, integrating both technical and organizational data transformation.
- Establishing and leading a high-performing data team to support business goals.
- Developing a collaborative and solution-oriented data culture across the organization.

Data Management and Organization:
- Ensuring data management is driven by the needs of end-users and customers.
- Overseeing the development of a modern enterprise data management system, including legal-specific data products.
- Coordinating cross-functional collaboration on data cleanup and migration.
- Identifying, acquiring, and integrating data sources to support analytics and other firm use-cases.

Data Science and Engineering:
- Overseeing the development of the firm's data infrastructure to connect data management with infrastructure, data science, and AI capabilities.
- Implementing data systems with robust data pipelines and workflows for efficient data collection, storage, and analysis.
- Overseeing the integration of data modeling, data science, AI solutions development, and software engineering.
- Collaborating with technology, information governance, and security teams to ensure data governance, security, and privacy protocols.

Data Delivery and Automation:
- Overseeing the integration of service delivery for data-driven products, including AI solutions.
- Collaborating with business owners to streamline and automate routine data delivery capabilities.
- Creating systems and processes to integrate data delivery with other firm functions like business analysis and legal service delivery.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborating with other firm functions to ensure an integrated data operation that supports business needs and drives innovation.
- Serving as the primary liaison between business units and technical teams to align data strategy with enterprise goals.
- Communicating complex data science concepts to non-technical stakeholders clearly and actionably.

Legal and Compliance Awareness:
- Familiarity with legal industry-specific data requirements, such as E-Discovery processes and regulatory standards (GDPR, HIPAA).
- Experience with international operations across geographic and regulatory environments for data.

Team Building and Mentorship:
- Defining team roles and responsibilities aligned with organizational objectives.
- Recruiting, training, and mentoring a diverse data team, including data managers, scientists, engineers, and analysts.
- Supervising direct reports, ensuring compliance with work hours, and managing staffing coverage.
- Supporting professional development and educational opportunities.
- Participating in hiring, performance appraisals, and other employee lifecycle events.
- Fostering a collaborative, innovative, and results-driven team culture.

Education and Experience Information:

Required:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 10+ years of experience in a data-related role, with 5+ years of management experience.
- Experience in leading large-scale data initiatives, preferably in technology or highly regulated industries like finance or healthcare.

Preferred:
- Strong understanding of the legal industry, legal tech systems, analytics, and legal operations.
- Experience with modern data operations, including data lakes and complex data migrations.
- Experience managing cross-functional projects involving engineering, data engineering, and operational business units.
- Knowledge of distributed systems and organizations.

Skills and Competencies:
- Strong leadership experience in building and mentoring data science teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to translate complex technical concepts to legal professionals and senior executives.
- Ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders across various departments.

Salary Information:

The expected annual pay range for this full-time position is $300,000 - $400,000, depending on geographic location, experience, and skillset. The law firm offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, long-term care coverage, and generous parental leave.
