Law Student Volunteer, Spring 2026

Job Responsibilities:
The United States Trustee Program (USTP) is seeking law student volunteers for its Office of the General Counsel and various field offices. The responsibilities for these positions are divided as follows:

Office of the General Counsel Interns:
- Conduct research and assist attorneys in various legal practice groups: Appellate, Chapter 11, Consumer, and General and Administrative.
- Draft and edit memoranda, USTP guidance and policy papers, court pleadings, and appellate briefs.
- Participate in moot courts to prepare attorneys for trial.
- Work on matters related to Ethics, Freedom of Information Act, Privacy Act, and Administrative Procedures Act.
- Observe Congressional hearings and prepare summaries for senior leadership.
- Work in-person at the Executive Office for . Trustees (EOUST) in Washington, DC.
- Opportunities for academic credit may be available.

Field Office Interns:
- Assist attorneys in preparing for bankruptcy court appearances and developing bankruptcy fraud referrals.
- Address attorney misconduct and screen cases for debtor abuse of the Bankruptcy Code.
- Review documents in chapter 7, 11, and 13 cases.
- Assist with drafting and filing motions and objections.
- Monitor section 341 meetings between debtors and creditors.
- Provide litigation support to attorneys and attend bankruptcy hearings and 341 meetings.
- Opportunities for academic credit may be available, as determined by the individual field office.

Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must be rising second or third-year law students.
- Strong research and writing skills are essential.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a small team are required.
- A commitment to fairness and integrity in the administration of the bankruptcy system is necessary.
- Background and interest in bankruptcy, litigation, administrative law, policy, and legislation are advantageous.
- Interns must generally commit to 10 to 16 hours per week for at least 10 weeks from September to December, with flexibility depending on the office.
- Applicants must be . Citizens.

Salary Information:
- The positions are uncompensated student volunteer roles.
- Academic credit and transit subsidies may be available, as specified.
