Position Summary:
The General Counsel at **Members Only** is responsible for leading the legal and government affairs department and managing all government affairs for the university. This includes providing strategic legal counsel to senior leadership, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and supporting the university's vision, mission, and strategic goals. The General Counsel will also serve as a member of the President's Cabinet and may represent the university with local, state, and national government officials and the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert legal advice and counsel on university matters including governance, compliance, risk management, employment law, contracts, commercial real estate, intellectual property, litigation, data privacy, and academic affairs.
- Communicate with key stakeholders on active, pending, and potential litigation.
- Review, research, and interpret legal issues for the organization.
- Manage the legal department, including contract administration, counsel to leadership, legal projects, litigation management, and compliance.
- Ensure the university's compliance with federal, state, and other external agencies' rules and regulations.
- Assist the compliance department in ensuring compliance practices are followed.
- Review legal team's correspondence, pleadings, and other documents.
- Select and retain outside counsel as needed.
- Counsel leadership, including the Board of Trustees, on policies, procedures, and other legal documents.
- Oversee and engage in discovery, fact investigation, and research.
- Represent the organization in judicial and administrative proceedings.
- Stay informed of evolving legal landscape and regulations related to higher education.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in a legal-counsel role.
- At least 5 years of experience within a higher education setting.
- Active license to practice law; Alabama licensure is required.
