Job Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Law Clerk position include:
- Drafting litigation working documents and preparing concise decisions based on case facts, law interpretations, and compliance with state and federal standards.
- Evaluating information to determine the status of a case.
- Monitoring, tracking, and following up on documentation, case files, or other assignments to ensure timelines are met and actions are completed.
- Preparing cases by conducting legal research and gathering evidence.
- Reviewing cases, applications, files, and records to determine the necessary actions.
Education and Experience Information
The Law Clerk position is designed for current law students or recent law school graduates. Applicants must be enrolled in a law program or have recently graduated from one. The position is open to first-year, second-year, and third-year law students, as well as recent graduates. The ability to earn school credit for externships must be coordinated with the applicant's college or university's internship coordinator.
Qualifications for the position include:
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented verbally.
- Ability to read and comprehend information and ideas presented in writing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to concentrate on tasks without being distracted.
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, and agency rules.
Salary Information
The Law Clerk positions are paid based on the student's year in law school:
- $26 per hour for first-year law students.
- $28 per hour for second-year law students.
- $30 per hour for third-year law students or recent graduates.
Supplemental Information
The position is part-time and temporary, with no eligibility for benefits. The work environment involves typical office settings, which are adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Employees may need to perform tasks such as walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, and driving an automobile. Special physical demands are not required for the position.
