**Job Title: Education Defense Fund Senior Legal Fellow**
**Job Responsibilities:**
The Senior Legal Fellows will play a pivotal role in supporting various components of the Education Defense Fund (EDF). Their responsibilities include:
- **Defending Student Civil Rights:** Contributing to the development of state-specific guidance and assessment tools for families, and providing input and advice on these resources. Fellows will also aid in creating trainings for state offices that enforce civil rights protections under federal and state law. Moreover, they will support the development of a network of student-led and student-centered advocacy organizations.
- **Ensuring Accountability:** Fellows will ensure that all components of the EDF remain accountable to the needs of affected students and families. They will gather and incorporate input from students and caregivers to maintain accountability throughout the process.
- **Alumni Network Participation:** Fellows will join an alumni network to support each other and the ongoing work of the EDF.
- **Proposal Development:** NCYL encourages fellows to propose new projects and initiatives that align with EDF’s mission to protect and advance student civil rights in the absence of federal advocacy or enforcement.
**Education and Experience Information:**
Eligible candidates for the EDF Fellowship must have recently served as attorneys in federal government positions, specifically in offices such as the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the . Department of Education or the Civil Rights Division (CRT) at the . Department of Justice, with a focus on education and civil rights. These candidates should be at a career transition point and possess experience in protecting and advancing the civil rights of students as attorneys at these federal agencies.
**Proposal Requirements:**
- Submit a short statement of interest (250-500 words) articulating interest in the fellowship and a proposal for contributing to one of EDF’s scopes of work.
- Provide brief responses to questions regarding past civil rights work outside federal OCR, specific skills or assets to bring to EDF, and perceived risks or challenges to EDF’s mission.
- Include a resume/CV and two references, including one previous supervisor.
**Fellowship Awards:**
Senior Legal Fellows will receive compensation of $12, per month for their services, with the fellowship lasting up to six months.
